When I moved here in 2001, there were already two groundhogs residing on the property: Hobart lived under the shed, and Julia had her den directly behind the house.

I can't always tell them apart, so I'm not sure if this is Julia sunning herself in front of her den, or Hobart waiting for Julia to meet him for a date.

I believe this is Julia eating an apple on my front porch.

I gave Julia her name, but originally I called the male groundhog "Woody" (as in woodchuck). Later I found out that his given name was Hobart.

When they found an apple that met their standards, they usually ate the whole thing.

Both Hobart and Julia are very shy. It's hard to get them to pose for pictures.

This was one of the few occasions I was able to get close to Julia without her running away.
