This essay was originally sent to the Sondheim list on 2000/04/08.
I've been exploring the web for resources related to the Grimm brothers and I found a great one designed by National Georgraphic. It contains the full text of an article about the brothers, as well as most of the stories that Lapine wove into his book for Into the Woods. There are also links to other web resources about the Grimms.

It's been a long time since I last read the original stories, and I was delighted to be reminded just how faithfully Lapine adapted, for example, Cinderella. A quote from the story: "The woman had brought two daughters into the house with her, who were beautiful and fair of face, but vile and black of heart."
Even Sondheim apparently appropriated some verses from this 1914 translation for his lyrics:
"Shiver and quiver, my little tree,
Silver and gold throw down over me."
